Production Stills

Spilling Cinema’s Secrets

Some find BTS (‘behind the scenes’) content incredibly interesting, allowing insight into the method and madness behind their favourite digital video products, and immense attention is often drawn to such images online. Others feel betrayed when the truth behind movie magic is exposed, and like a heartbroken 10-year-old Nat, could never look at fantasy films the same way again.

“Speed and silence are paramount for capturing Production Stills, particularly on indoor sets full of important people that mustn’t be disturbed. The common obstacle is a lack of light pointing at the crew; this makes it incredibly difficult to get well-exposed images with a deep depth of field, and even harder to get subjects both from behind and in front of the camera equally visible. Often I’m forced to rely on the high dynamic range capabilities of my full frame cameras, and if I can’t capture both cast and crew together in one shot, I’ll aim for strong examples of each on their own.”

Nat says…

A young woman is filmed playing the violin
A pair of actors wait to begin a take on set
A man stabilises a camera tripod
Closeup of a man operating a camera
A small crew film an interview on a large balcony
